A Dot-Com Phoenix Reborn In Web2.0 PDF Print E-mail
Written by Len Bai
Thursday, 03 May 2007

Extensively blooming through year 2006, Web2.0 has formally been the hottest topic in the UK's internet industry. News from Internet World 2007 shows that Web2.0, expected as the next generation of web platform, is dominating the array of keynotes and practical seminars in this year's event, while Search Engine Marketing was the leading actor in last year.

The overwhelming interest on Web2.0 leads to a large amount of companies jumping on this IT bandwagon. Unlike many other blindly followers, Boo, one of the most high-profile failures of the dot-com crash in 2000, has been rebranded and launched recently as a user generated travelling content website, involving customer reviews and social networking functionalities. The new site was built up by using Ajax and PHP. Boo.com's cheif operating officer believes that they are growing their business on solid foundations and going to succeed.

China Search Engine Market In 2007 PDF Print E-mail
Written by Len Bai
Sunday, 14 January 2007

On the New Year Day of 2007,  Sohu.com, one of the top three Chinese portal sites, launched its newly upgraded search engine Sogou version 3.0. This symbolised that battles on the China search market in the new year have been started.

China's search market has been dominated by Baidu and Google since 2003. These two companies in combination account for nearly 90% of China's online searching market, in which Baidu has got the largest share of 56.6 percent of the total market and Google ranks the second with a share of 32.8 percent. Yahoo! is in the third position, but it's only got less than 5 percent market share, leading all the other minor players on the search engine market.

My Website In 2003 Has Been Recovered Online PDF Print E-mail
Written by Len Bai
Saturday, 13 January 2007

The site was built up with ASP + Microsoft Access Database. I searched around on Internet for free ASP hosting space, but didn't get anything good. In order to present the site in three years ago, I therefore decided to convert all asp files to php so that I could host it on my current linux space.

It didn't take too long to do the conversion work since the site was not big anyway. One pity is that the files which I got on my hard disk are not the latest ones. So some sections on the site such as Experience and Favorite are missing. In fact in the Experience section, I listed all my past IT projects with descriptions, images, and demo systems. But now they are all gone and there seems no way for me to get them back. What a pity.

The site can be viewed at http://www.bailianjun.com/forerunner-net/default.php

The Problems in the Update to Joomla 1.5 PDF Print E-mail
Written by Len Bai
Friday, 22 December 2006

When constructing my new site with using Joomla, I first deployed the latest Joomla 1.5 edition. But in the end, I gave up it. Being a beta edition, Joomla 1.5 is actually not recommended as a commercial product, said on its official website.

With the curiosity to new stuff, I installed Joomla 1.5 and quickly found this was a big bug. The installation directory was the root folder of www.bailianjun.com. When I accessed the site through Internet Explorer, the root domain of the site became to http://www.bailianjun.com/cgi-system/ which was obviously an error and therefore caused all other pages not accessible.

The Evolution of Len Bai's Personal Website PDF Print E-mail
Written by Len Bai
Thursday, 21 December 2006

The history of my personal website can be traced back to 2001.  There are basically four stages in the site's evolution.

1. Microsoft Frontpage

When I started to learn Frontpage in 2001, the final year of my first degree, I tried to build my very first personal website. It simply consisted of a couple of static pages linking with each other, with some gif images and a background midi music. That was finished in OMRON Automation lab in Tongji University. I then found a free hosting space on 163.com and uploaded the pages on. I was pleased with the work for a while. Unfortunately, the original files and the URL have been lost.

2. ASP + Access Database

By the chance of working part time in an educational software company, I got in touched with the dynamic web programming technology ASP which was very popular at that time. Being in charge of some web projects such as School Information Platform, Online Procurement System and Online Course Booking System, I gained some valuable experiences not only on the technical side, but on project management, team building and the understanding of the technology advances in the Internet industry.
